The Old Gum

The tree stood towering over everyone and everything.
It stood tall and still, not alive, but not yet dead.
Housing animals large and small.
It's symmetry standing out like a red rose among black ash.

On the uppermost branch there was a scar.
It shows of what the tree was.
A survivor of a thousand storms.

It stood defiant, its great roots embedden in the rich brown soil.
Machines come along, the tree stands alone, swaying with grace.
It stands defenceless, waiting, waiting.

Humanity cut down the great old gum.
Only the stump remains.
The field is stripped of shade.
